Digital Media
In today's task, we looked at why digital media is important, why we use it in our day-to-day lives and why we need it.
Before I watched these videos, I didn't understand the importance of digital media or its meaning. For me, digital media was just something that had become extremely popular and was just used for communication on social media. However, I now understand that not only is digital media used for online communication it is also used in other aspects such as teaching, learning, experience, and many more.
As someone who is learning about digital media and wishes to someday work in this field, I realized that you need different skills when dealing with digital media. E.g. like video 2 mentions “turning on a computer and completing an online job application require different skills”. Some of these skills involve communication including storytelling, creativity, marketing, and of course technical computer skills. Because digital media is so broad it is important to learn all these skills.
Although it is not a need to know all these skills it is important to at least identify some of these skills now that the world is becoming more digital. video 2 also points out that you need some technical skills for school assignments now and also some jobs require these skills.
Digital media is so different from what we identify as traditional media (Newspaper, magazines, radio, direct mail, etc.) e.g. communication was a lot harder back then. Without digital media, we wouldn't have had all these social media platforms like Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Tik Tok to communicate with anyone worldwide.
It is now easier to share information online with search engines, social media, and websites. In video 3 Doug Belshaw explained in his TED talk how a viral meme was shared by many and remixed to send different messages to people. He talked about how without digital media you would have had to physically take the image and it would have taken you forever to just send it to a few people whereas with digital media you can send it to thousands of people by just clicking a few buttons.
Online media also allows us to market better. With digital media, we can use social media to promote and advertise products and we can also use links to sell products online globally.
I believe these are the reasons why digital media was created and why it is so important.
Based on the quote from Marshall McLuhan “the medium is the message”. From my perspective, this quote means that the media is the messenger because we (worldwide) all use the media for information.

After reading Christelle’s blog post on digital media I feel more informed about the importance of digital media and how much it has evolved. I also think the layout of the blog is really well put together as it flows well as you are reading it. The length of the blog is great as it covers what was discussed in each video and gave a helpful insight. The links at the bottom are well organised and contains every video she watched or referred to in the blog.
ReplyDeleteAt the beginning of the blog, Christelle gave her thoughts on the importance of digital media, not just for online communication but also for people’s careers. An interesting point that she makes is that without digital media it would be extremely difficult to communicate with each other in today’s society. We rely so heavily on our smartphones/computers for communication and for some people their careers rely on it. Another interesting point made was just how much media has changed over the years from traditional media and how difficult it must have been to communicate back then when social media wasn’t around.
In the final paragraphs Christelle discusses what was talked about during a TED talk about media literacy through the use of memes. She also refers to how digital media can benefit people's businesses and products through online promotion and advertising which I think is a great point to make as digital media provides anybody with the ability to freely promote their business or product.
A question that I have about digital media would be how many people in today’s world use digital media over traditional media outlets? Also how are traditional media companies surviving since digital media has become so popular?
A suggestion that the writer could try out in the future could be to include a few images that complement what a paragraph is talking about.
At the end of reading this blog I would first like to mention my favourite part of the blog. My personal favourite section of this blog is in the fourth paragraph which says, “Without digital media, we wouldn't have had all these social media platforms like Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Tik Tok to communicate with anyone worldwide.” The reason why this is my favourite section in the blog is because it made me realise how much digital media and technology has changed the world so drastically in how we are able to communicate, work and obtain information instantly as opposed to older forms of media like newspapers and radios.
ReplyDeleteI think that the writer has done well in showing how personally she used to view digital media versus how she sees it now. In the first paragraph the writer says her previous thoughts on digital media by saying, “For me, digital media was just something that had become extremely popular and was just used for communication on social media”.
Two questions that I have about digital media that are not included in this blog are how do website’s function? And what are the advantages of digital media over traditional media?
What I learned from reading this blog post is that how high an impact digital media has on the job market and how people with a high digital literacy are being sought after by employers.
What I think that I can take from this blog to help me improve my own blog writing is to space my paragraphs out more into more consumable chunks rather than having very large ones that make it hard to find specific pieces of information.
What I would recommend to this writer when doing more work like this in the future is to expand on certain topics. For example some of the digital media skills that are more skilled like using HTML, coding and ability to use software’s from companies like Adobe and Microsoft.
Overall I think that this is a great perspective from someone that is in the process of learning digital media and sharing their own knowledge in this area.
