Study Skill

Today I want to talk about the topic of study skills. During my research I watched 3 videos talking about the different methods and techniques
on ways to study. I want to look back on and share my experience with reading, writing, and studying. I want to also focus on how now knowing this information can now help me in the future.

As a person with learning difficulties, I have always found it very difficult to stay focused when studying or doing assignments. Even trying to focus on my tasks for more than 10 minutes without my mind wandering off and then completely forgetting where I left off was hard. I found the video by Mike and Matty to be extremely helpful. He talked about the different steps in which others can use to improve their studying. Here are the top 3 tips I found more useful.

  1. Quizzing - it is important to challenge your brain to improve your learning. Based on my personal experience in secondary school I was given answers to tests a lot and always shown a very detailed way on how I should do my assignments, at first I thought that this was helpful but in reality, it didn't allow me to exercise my brain so I lacked at doing assignments later on.

  1. Spacing out - giving yourself a few minutes every day to study instead of cramming it all in one day. This is what stuck out to me the most, as it reminds me of my school days on how I used to cram all my studying on the night before exams and then completely forget everything I studied the night before on the day of the exams.

  1. Mixing - A method I found quite useful in the past. I found that looking at multiple articles and watching as many videos as before writing my assignments allowed me to explore my imagination as I got to look at different points of view before forming my own opinions.

When it comes to studying, although I am not a big fan of writing (Especially assignments), I do enjoy reading. Recently I read the book animal farm and found that all the signs and symbols really helped me get a feel on what the story was all about, which is interesting because Thomas Frank briefly mentions in his video how symbols and texts can be very telling when reading a book. He also talked about how marking and taking notes can be helpful.

And finally, the 3rd video is focused on Media literature. My knowledge of Media literature is when we the people critically evaluate the media from our perspective. Andrea Quijada did a great job at showing an example of this in her TED talk. In the video, she used an example of a girl going shopping with her mother, with the words reading, writing, and coordinating. She explained different ways that this ad could be perceived. This reminded me of how the media is today, specifically celebrities, and the different ways they are perceived by the public. E.g. Kim Kardashian is either seen as a role model for women's empowerment or as someone who oversexualizes her body for money and fame.

In the future, I wish to make use of all these tips and share them with other peers.
