Technological Evolution

     Technological Evolution

Today's topic is all about the evolution of technology and how we use media literacy to influence us. I have always found it interesting how technology changes over the years and how humans where able to go from discovering fire, stone, wood, and bones to discovering how to make something amazing like the World Wide Web and the iPhone.

This shows us how quickly technology and society changes in just a few years. Before i go more in dept in this topic i would first like to discuss the topic of media literacy and share my opinions.

 What is media Literacy?

Media literacy follows the idea of promoting awareness of media influence and standing against consuming and creating too much media. It allows people to access, critically evaluate and manipulate the media.

According to the video 1 Media literacy didn’t really become a thing until around the 1960s. Before then people received information from word of mouth but since then they where able to use a new way to spreed infromation using newspaper, pamphlets, and motion pictures to spreed information quicker.

What happens when we rely on the media?

I feel like as time passes, we rely on media for facts even more. Whereas years ago, we only had newspapers, the radio, pamphlets, and TV, we now have social media where its alot easier and faster to access. The more we view the media the more we trust and count on it. Although social media is an effective way to share news it can also be so dangerous because most of what we see online has some sort of misinformation/disinformation.

Governments and organisations know that we tend to follow the people we trust (Celebrities, politicians etc.) as they started using them to spread information and promote products to convince and change the mind of others or in better words “passive minds”.

What happens if that access is exploited?

Video 3 metions how back in the day their main target audience when it came to sharing information (Newspaper, Magazines, TV, and Radio) was the working/middle class. Personally, I feel like these systems were built this way to make sure that the poor stayed poor and the rich got richer. We work for the rich. The rich collect the prophets meanwhile other classes can only live by their hard work and labor which is an issue because as there is a big problem when it comes to employment.

It is a lot harder for people to get jobs nowadays because people have started using machines and technology for everything. E.g. Amazon is one of the biggest companies in the world but they don’t need as many workers as most of the work is done using technology. This is good for the employer as they don’t have to pay many employees.

 How is technology developing?

As mentioned before technology is developing extremely quickly. I believe that even in five years from now a lot will change. There's been talks of big companies like amazon, eBay, FedEx, and UPS, using drones to deliver parcels, and how robots will take over and take jobs in retail, warehouse and many more.
