Looking Back

Image
This week we are coming down to the final steps in our research project. Because the week before was such a busy week, we ended up leaving everything last minute. This meant we had to put in a lot of work, time, and effort to get this project finished properly.  Our task this week was to get the video completed and then uploaded on youtube so that we can present it to the class in the following week. We only had our research and video down so we still needed to: Find a location to record our video Edit the video Upload the finishing product onto youtube And we had just one week. It was very possible to do so however, the problem was that none of us knew how to edit or upload a video onto youtube. This week consisted of mostly just trying to figure things out (which was very stressful). Location The first step was asking one of our tutors to borrow a camera from our school, once we had our camera it was time to begin our recording process. We started by gathering ideas and looking a...

Starting Out

Image
This week we are introducing project blogs. My class and I have been asked to create a group project following a social issue of our choice, and to document our journey through this process. For this project, I am working with Aiden Kelly, Rhys Mc Carthy, and Roibeard Mac Cumascaigh from my group 3 Introduction to Digital Media class.  We have been asked to cover the topic of misinformation and disinformation in the media. I personally think that this is a very interesting topic seeing as it's one of those subjects that is commonly discussed yet rarely understood.  This subject goes into dept on the misleading, confusing and false information in the media that we had to face for decades now, even before the internet was introduced to the world. It talks about the differences between misinformation vs disinformation, the different ways and methods used by the media and government to convince the minds of its passive audience and it also discusses the dangers this can lead to. Media Representation

Image
What is representation?    From my understanding representation is based on the way we view, perceive, and describe someone or something. For example, if I was asked to draw a picture of my sister and I drew her based on my perspective and thoughts of her that would be my representation of that person. The way we think of diverse types of people (ethnicities, culture, age, gender, nations, etc.) from what we see would also be our representation of that group of people.    How accurate is representation vs reality?    Following the Stuard Hall’s theory on representation, he that representation does not happen after the event in fact it becomes distorted and changes. He also stated that it's the media who gives meaning to those events.    I couldn't agree more with this theory as I have witnessed how media stereotypes have left an effect on people. For instance, black women and Asian men are known as the least respected in society and I feel like a ...

Peer Review 2

Image
Peer Review 2 This week we did another peer review for our Introduction to Digital Media reading task. I truly learned a lot this time around when it came to the blogs I was giving feedback to. Not only was I able to reflect on my own blog based on the feedback I was giving, but it also gave me the opportunity to look at different writing styles and opinions.    Reading Katie's blog really gave me a clear idea on how to express my points while keeping things short and simple, the way that she was able to state her opinions well and then move on to the next topic quickly was amazing and something I realized I needed to learn how to do.    While reading Kailan's blog I noticed how everything was well thought out and planned.  Her blog was very clear when it came to messaging, opinions and examples. When reading her blog, it really felt like she was speaking to the viewer/reader which I think is very inspiring and knowledgeable.    I would also like to po...

Technological Evolution

Image
Technological Evolution    link to image Today's topic is all about the evolution of technology and how we use media literacy to influence us. I have always found it interesting how technology changes over the years and how humans where able to go from discovering fire, stone, wood, and bones to discovering how to make something amazing like the World Wide Web and the iPhone.    This shows us how quickly technology and society changes in just a few years. Before i go more in dept in this topic i would first like to discuss the topic of media literacy and share my opinions.      What is media Literacy?      Media literacy follows the idea of promoting awareness of media influence and standing against consuming and creating too much media. It allows people to access, critically evaluate and manipulate the media.      According to the video 1 Media literacy didn’t really become a thing until around t...

Media Ethics

Image
What is media Ethics? Media ethics explores different types of ethical principles and standards of media. This includes the internet, broadcast media, videos, etc. its purpose is to guide us to make a positive impact through our decisions and actions. Based on the video I watched by The Guardian regarding the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Christopher Wylie a former SCL employee explained how the company used apps on Facebook to “change their audience behavior”. They did this by tricking people into joining the app and then harvested data from the people who not only used and joined it but also their friends on Facebook. They would use a specific type of message over and over again until they started to change their consumer’s minds, without their knowledge. This is why I believe that when looking at different articles, statements, and social media posts it is important to check whether or not that those statements are facts or opinions. A lot of the time these “facts” are mostly b...

Peer Feedback 1

Image
I have always felt as though I could never give anyone feedback because I thought I lacked so much. This was my first time giving peer feedback, so when I was asked to do it as part of my reading task I was flooded with so much anxiety. Not only was I in fear of being judged I also didn't want to “give the wrong advice” or sound cooky. As dramatic as that all sounds, this led me to leave it until the last minute. However, that was not the case at all and I ended enjoying it. I was given two blogs from two different colleagues to give feedback on, and from these vlogs, I was able to learn so much from not only their point of view on certain things but also a bit about them as people. Both posts thought me how to be more expressive, with one talking about the LGBTQ+ community and the other one sharing her struggles. It was great to see that I was not the only one with struggles and how we all want to just do well in the end. This made me realize how we are all in the same boat and ho...
