Building Characters

Image
I am currently writing a short story and this is the character I came up with :  This is how I imagined my character looking like, I happened to find a similar image to what I had in mind in my head on Pinterest.   Character’s Name : Ludmilla Kovacevic Who is your character Physically? Ludmilla is a strong headed 17-year-old girl, living in in the 1800s who has a hard time following the rules they had set for women and young girls back then. A lot of people saying she’s just like her mother who was a princess that was thrown out of her family palace for disobeying the palace rules and was also known to be stubborn and free-spirited. Often feeling misunderstood and lonely with her mother dying when she was just a little girl, she often wonders how life would be if she was around, and how it would feel like to be “free” without any rules and people trying to decide her day to day life.   What do they look like? Physically? She was ...

Hi my name is Christelle da Gama and I am studying Creative Writing in Colaiste Dhulaigh College. I have always been into creative writing ever since I was a little girl. I remember writing short stories, reading books and writing reviews for hours I’m my room. I want to focus my blog on these type of topics and more. My main goal is to inspire others and share my experiences with creative writing.  "Creativity is intelligence but fun" - Albert Einstein

Showing not telling

Image
What my understanding of Showing rather than Telling My understanding of showing Rather than telling is basically explaining what the person is doing, or what is going on around her rather than just saying e.g. "The girl fell in love" describe it by saying something like “She looked at him feeling butterfly’s in her stomach, her heart was pounding out of her chest, and she felt her hands getting all sweaty. This doesn’t necessarily mean explaining everything in sharp detail just giving people an idea of what is going on. I have given two examples of my way of showing rather than telling: Jim was tired – barely dragging himself out of bed Jim started making himself a cup of coffee, his eyes were bloodshot he was messy and he dragged his feet.   It was Raining – I sat in my PJs in the comfort of my own home next to the fire with a mug of hot chocolate, while listening to a light drumming sound hitting the window and roof. The room smelt damp from my clothes sitting on my...

Review

I wrote a story critique/review on a short story called Flower Wild by Shane Tivenan. The story was based on real-life events when Violet Gibson shot Benito Mussolini. Below I copy and pasted my own review on what I thought about the story:  Discuss what you liked about the story Even though I wasn’t a big fan of the story, I really think that the story was well thought out and arranged. The description was very good as well I like the part when she said. “ I was allowed to read, but only what I was told to read”. That just randomly stood out to me   Discuss any elements you did not like   I think that the story was quite repetitive, for example when it kept saying “I was taken back to Northampton after I shot the Italian” sort of confused me and I ended up losing track of the story a few times.     Would you change anything about the story? Give reasons for your answers There’s not muc...

Favorite Drama

Image
The Princess Weiyoung The Princess Weiyoung is a Chinese historical fiction based on drama, action and romance. The story shows revenge, betrayal, mystery and love. The story begins when the princess of Northern Liang is escaping death after her whole family is killed by the Chiyun Clan of Northern Wei, after being framed. She ends up taking the identity of Li Weiyoung, the illegitimate daughter of the prime minister of Northern Wei to get revenge on those responsible for the death of her family. She falls in love with the Emperor's grandson without knowing his true status. What I really liked most about this drama was the how brave and intelligent the main character (Weiyoung) is. Women in these type of shows aren't really shown in this light, its always just them waiting for a prince to save them. So that's what I really respected about this show. Weiyoung can be a bit daring at times and get into a lot of trouble, but even then she always finds a way t...

How I Come up with ideas

Image
How I come up with ideas How I normally come up with ideas is fairly simple. this is what I like to do: 1. Choosing my topic - this can be any word like hat, car, portal then I base my story on that. I also like to make a list of random keywords if I can't think of a specific word. 2. Brainstorming - when I have chosen a word I like to draw a diagram like the image above and beside each line I start brainstorming the genre, setting, title, dilemma, storyline and characters based on that word. this is where I write anything that comes to mind. 3.  Writing - I first start writing my story I don't worry too much about making it perfect, I just write down anything and try to come up with a story. I find writing it down on paper first is the easiest. 4. Editing - this is when i go back and fix any spelling mistakes or parts of the story to make it make more sense and make sure its written correctly.  At the start I used to never like sharing my ide...
