Media Ethics

Image
What is media Ethics? Media ethics explores different types of ethical principles and standards of media. This includes the internet, broadcast media, videos, etc. its purpose is to guide us to make a positive impact through our decisions and actions. Based on the video I watched by The Guardian regarding the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Christopher Wylie a former SCL employee explained how the company used apps on Facebook to “change their audience behavior”. They did this by tricking people into joining the app and then harvested data from the people who not only used and joined it but also their friends on Facebook. They would use a specific type of message over and over again until they started to change their consumer’s minds, without their knowledge. This is why I believe that when looking at different articles, statements, and social media posts it is important to check whether or not that those statements are facts or opinions. A lot of the time these “facts” are mostly b...

Peer Feedback 1

Image
I have always felt as though I could never give anyone feedback because I thought I lacked so much. This was my first time giving peer feedback, so when I was asked to do it as part of my reading task I was flooded with so much anxiety. Not only was I in fear of being judged I also didn't want to “give the wrong advice” or sound cooky. As dramatic as that all sounds, this led me to leave it until the last minute. However, that was not the case at all and I ended enjoying it. I was given two blogs from two different colleagues to give feedback on, and from these vlogs, I was able to learn so much from not only their point of view on certain things but also a bit about them as people. Both posts thought me how to be more expressive, with one talking about the LGBTQ+ community and the other one sharing her struggles. It was great to see that I was not the only one with struggles and how we all want to just do well in the end. This made me realize how we are all in the same boat and ho...

Production Process

picture In today's task, we were given four videos to asses with the topic of design thinking. What is design thinking? well from my perspective design thinking is gathering information/ideas or having a vision before creating something. This also includes collecting secondary and primary resources and also interacting with an audience to get a feel of what type of content you want. I think it is very important to include design thinking in your projects as it gives you a sense of what kind of content you want to release or share. The video by aj&smart did a good job at explaining the five steps of design thinking you could use. Empathize gather information to understand who your target audience is and understand who you are designing for. Define then taking that information and defining what their needs, wants and challenges are. Isolate start brainstorming with the information from what you learned from the first two steps. Prototype taking all those ideas and breaking them...

Media Literacy

Image
Today I went back and looked at the week four reading task. This task was all about media literacy but mostly focused on how society deals with it and how it could improve.  In this task, we were presented with three reading pieces, which I had trouble trying to comprehend. It took me reading the same paragraphs a few times to understand the message. however, despite this issue, I was able to collect some facts I found interesting. Opinion: Digital Media companies found lacking with helping users understand the online environment. This reading by Dr. Niamh Kirk, talked a lot about the misinformation given online. according to this essay that these companies (Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Twitter) were all found to have had "significant weaknesses in terms of the structure and practice of the code".   Irish users specifically were not properly protected online when it came to online misinformation. Dr. Niamh Kirk explained that other than sponsoring the development of t...

Digital Media

Image
link to picture In today's task, we looked at why digital media is important, why we use it in our day-to-day lives and why we need it. Before I watched these videos, I didn't understand the importance of digital media or its meaning. For me, digital media was just something that had become extremely popular and was just used for communication on social media. However, I now understand that not only is digital media used for online communication it is also used in other aspects such as teaching, learning, experience, and many more. As someone who is learning about digital media and wishes to someday work in this field, I realized that you need different skills when dealing with digital media. E.g. like video 2 mentions “turning on a computer and completing an online job application require different skills”. Some of these skills involve communication including storytelling, creativity, marketing, and of course technical computer skills. Because digital media is so broad it is i...

Study Skill

Image
link to picture Today I want to talk about the topic of study skills. During my research I watched 3 videos talking about the different methods and techniques  on  ways to study. I want to look back on and share my experience with reading, writing, and studying. I  want to also  focus on how now knowing this information can now help me in the future.     As a person with learning difficulties, I have always found it very difficult to stay focused when studying or doing assignments. Even trying to focus on my tasks for more than 10 minutes without my mind wandering off and then completely forgetting where I left off was hard. I found the video by Mike and Matty  to be extremely helpful. He talked about the different  steps in  which others can use to improve their studying. Here are the top 3 tips I found more useful.     Quizzing - it is important to challenge your brain to improve your learning. Based on my personal experien...

Intruduction

Image
link to picture Introduction   Hello all, my name is Christelle (mostly referred to as Chrissy) a 20 year old student in TUD (Technological University Dublin) studying Creative Digital Media. Firstly, I would like to welcome you all to my blog where I plan to not only share my ideas and experiences but to inspire others but to focus and discuss different types of topics as part as my digital media course.   How I got here As a young girl I have always been so interested in writing, designing, creating etc (specifically writing short stories, novels, poems, film scripts and drawing and crafting). It was something I did as a hobby in my free time, so I already knew I wanted to do something like that as a career when I finish secondary school. After I left school, I took a year off to really focus on my plans for the future. I later joined a QQI level 5 creative writing course in Colaiste Dhulaigh College for a year. Although I struggle a lot academically...
